Fall Semester

Hello,

Some new things:

The fall semester is right around the corner. I wanted to remind you that I can offer library instruction (also called bibliographic instruction or BI) for your classes. If you would like me to teach your class, please allow at least 2 weeks of notice to schedule a time for instruction. Our computer lab can fill up quickly during the first 2-3 weeks of class so setting up a time sooner is usually better than later. I can come to the classroom to teach these BIs but I prefer to have the sessions in the library. It helps to bring the students to the library so they can visit the facility and increase their comfort level with the library. This class shows your students how to access electronic and print resources in the library.

When you contact me about presenting a BI, I will need the following information:

1. The number of students in the class (needed for handouts and room size).
2. Your expectations for the BI. (Will they have an assignment?)
a. If the students have an assignment, what are the requirements? When was the assignment given? What topics might students choose?
Will they be expected to follow certain steps or procedures? What resources are they expected to use? How will the final product be presented? What format will be expected for the bibliography? When is it due?
b. If you'd like a basic library orientation and the students have no assignment, what library resources would you like me to highlight?
3. Let me know if you'd like to schedule a tour along with the BI.

If you have any questions or would like to set up a time for a time for a BI class, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Also, I have created a Value Line Online Wutorial (online tutorial). It's a business database that deals specifically with the stock market.

A direct link is available below:

If you have an interest in the market, Value Line is definitely a source worth looking at.

In addition, ABI/Inform is our resource of the month for September. To celebrate, I will also be teaching a couple of quick 30 minute ABI/Inform sessions in September in Rm. 217 of Ablah Library. These sessions are scheduled at:

Friday, Sept 1 at 12-12.30 pm
Thursday, Sept 14 at 12-12.30 pm

Finally, I added a neat dvd to the collection called Class Dismissed: How TV Frames the Working Class. If you're a documentary junkie, you may like this.
