Wishing Everyone a Happy Holiday Season and New Year

Can you believe 2010 is almost over? Sometimes I wonder where the time goes. At any rate, I wanted to wish everyone a happy new year. Oh, and don’t forget Festivus. It’s the holiday for the rest of us.

So much has happened in the news lately. I do have some thoughts on Wikileaks. Numero uno -it looks like a certifiable mess. Secondly, most librarians seem awfully quiet about it. To me, I can see why it's really challenging information. Governments keep secrets to avoid global conflict, etc. On "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!", they made it sound like a big joke. If that truly is the case, I don't think the international reaction would be so strong. Personally, sometimes there are things I'd be perfectly happy not knowing. That being said, I think this is an excellent example of the growing role of the internet in public discourse. Librarians talk incessantly about how technology combined with information is powerful stuff. Still, I would never have imagined a web site could cause such a stir! We're living in an interesting age.

Until next time, catch me in the library.
